There are currently around 5,400 private schools in Germany, including a great number of “Gymnasien” (secondary schools that focus on academic learning). Roughly one in ten pupils studies at a private school. Private “Gymnasien” tend to have a relatively high proportion of foreign pupils. These schools are partially funded by the state with each one also charging various amounts in monthly tuition fees.
Private schools place particular importance on the personal and individual development of each one of their pupils. An ethos which fosters multi-cultural, cosmopolitan development is considered an important priority.
